Bloomberg Green Gold is China’s first media platform that focuses on the green economy. Since 2023, with the deepening of investors, enterprises and professional institutions’ attention to ESG, Bloomberg Green Gold upgraded from the “ESG Pioneer” award to launch the “ESG 50” award in August. The “2023 Bloomberg Green Gold ESG 50” award results were jointly selected by the jury composed of Bloomberg Green Gold, Deloitte, Bloomberg New Energy Finance, Nengjing and domestic and foreign authoritative experts in the field of ESG, aiming to meet the challenges and opportunities brought by climate change, follow the strategic direction of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, and commend the benchmark enterprises in the ESG field.

As China’s first integrated production model enterprise certified by SGS, Modern Dairy regards ESG as part of its core competitiveness, and incorporates green and low-carbon transformation and development into the important strategy of dairy enterprises. Modern Dairy builds a green circular industrial chain of “forage planting - dairy cow breeding - manure treatment - biogas slurry return to the field (biogas power generation) - forage planting” and makes efforts from two aspects of innovative comprehensive treatment technology and end development and utilization, scientifically treats the manure generated in the breeding process, and realizes the resource utilization of waste. All farms have achieved harmless and resource utilization of manure. In 2022, the biogas production was 11,232,531 cubic meters, the power generation was 24,003,720 kWh, the steam output was 370,828.51 tons, the biogas residue was 2,296,020 cubic meters and all recovered and used as bedding material.

Modern Dairy adopts different measures according to different farms, develops various circular economy models, establishes eco-friendly farms, promotes ecological agriculture technology, improves environmental quality, and supports the sustainable development of domestic breeding industry. Modern Dairy Bengbu Farm, as the largest dairy cow farm in China, has 40,000 dairy cows and 100,000 mu of silage planting base around the farm. The manure fertilizer after fermentation is returned to the planting land through pipelines, reducing the fertilizer use by 20-25 kg per mu, achieving silage yield increase and income generation, and improving the quality of silage corn. Hongya Farm started to build biogas liquid pipeline network in 2011, covering a wide area, efficiently delivering biogas liquid organic fertilizer, benefiting local farmers, driving local tea production, improving local soil, increasing soil fertility, and restoring ecology.

Modern Dairy fully implements the carbon reduction and green action measures and helps to achieve the overall goal of “carbon peak + carbon neutrality”. The company has set specific carbon emission reduction targets and implementation steps, including improving yield, adjusting feed formula, improving production efficiency, etc., and plans to reduce carbon emission intensity by 7%, 15% and 20% respectively in 2025, 2030 and 2035. Based on 2021 as the base year, in 2022, Modern Dairy completed 16.67% of the first stage carbon emission target.

The continuous practice of ESG concept has won Modern Dairy many awards and high recognition from all walks of life. In the first half of 2023, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) officially released “Implementing the Global Development Initiative, Accelerating the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda: Corporate ‘Carbon Neutrality’ Target Setting and Global Cooperation”. In the report, Modern Dairy Group was highlighted as an excellent case of reducing carbon emissions from breeding activities in the agricultural food industry. At the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) held in December this year, with its pioneering practice of manure resource utilization, the company became the only enterprise in China’s animal husbandry industry to be selected into the “2023 Enterprise Climate Action Case Collection”. This time, it won the 2023 Bloomberg Green Gold ESG 50 Award for Environmental Excellence, which reflects the market’s full recognition of Modern Dairy’s achievements in the ESG environmental field.
